Set in 1859–just one year prior to the onset of the Civil War–my upcoming novel, Under Moonlit Skies touches on some of the tensions of the times. Though research is a part of all of my novels, this third book was possibly the most challenging and intriguing to write/research.
The novel takes readers on a journey from the romance of the prairie to the harsh realities of the big city. But the journey my characters are on runs much deeper than the struggles of life. Theirs is a spiritual journey of the heart and soul. One in which God breaks down their misconceptions and brings them to the point of surrender.
I thoroughly enjoyed creating the diverse characters in this novel. There’s Stewart (Stew) Brant, a roving cowboy with barely a cent in his pocket, but who possesses a heart of gold.
Esther Stanton who has all the luxuries a young woman could dream of, and yet longs for a simple life of love she may never have opportunity to enjoy.
Isaac and Abigail Simmons, along with their young son, Benjamin (Benji), are free blacks clinging to faith, hope, and love, until what’s most precious to them–their freedom–becomes threatened.
Then, there’s the dashing, suave businessman, Lawrence Del Ray, whose charming exterior may not be all that it seems.

Hi Lois! It’s great to meet you! Yes. The Civil War era is a sad and yet fascinating time period. I’m actually researching for my fourth novel which will be set during the latter part and immediately following the Civil War. This third novel, Under Moonlit Skies, takes place just prior to it.
