On this Independence Day, I thought it appropriate to share about the slogan: “Making America Great Again”. To do that, perhaps we need to understand the origin of that greatness. America’s greatness has little to do with foreign policies, healthcare, government funding, or presidential promises. Instead, it has to do with the fundamental truths and spiritual values this country was founded on: Courage. Religious freedom. And reverence for God.

The pilgrims who ventured to this land risked their lives for what they believed in. Many died trying to gain the freedom to worship and live according to their
convictions. It was courage that spurred them to voyage into the unknown,
and it was faith in God that gave them the strength to succeed.

I wonder, over time, have we lost these honorable qualities as a nation? Have we pushed aside the God we once embraced as our leader? Have we veiled our faith, not allowing it to shine, much as Moses veiled his face before the Israelites?

I Corinthians 3:18 says we are to be a people “who with unveiled faces all reflect the Lord’s glory” and that we are “being transformed into his likeness”. If America is to be great again, it must come from God’s presence within us, His people.

Do we openly give God the glory when He blesses us? Do we bow our heads daily in prayer for our country, our leaders? Do we take time to help those who are hurting and in need? There are so many ways we can let God shine through our lives. Even seemingly small things can make such a huge difference.

Do we want America to become great again? Psalm 33:16-17 says plainly, “No king is saved by the size of his army; no warrior escapes by his great strength. A horse is a vain hope for deliverance; despite all it’s great strength it cannot save. But the eyes of the Lord are on those who fear Him, on those whose hope is in his unfailing love, to deliver them from death and keep them alive in famine.”

In other words, it isn’t the size of our military forces, guns, intelligence, or power that will deliver our nation from the troubles it’s in. The future of America lies within regaining a respect and reverent fear for Almighty God. He alone can save us and make us great once again. May we humble ourselves before Him, knowing He alone holds the answers.

What makes America great in your eyes?

I pray you’ll join me in humble prayer for our nation and our leaders on this Independence Day and at this pivotal point in history.
