A wonderful debut novel by author Tara Johnson! This story lands readers right at the start of the Civil War and takes them through the first year. Set in Savannah, Georgia, Engraved on the Heart, takes us into the heart of the deep south with all its grandeur. There we meet Keziah Montgomery, a shy yet beautiful young lady with an illness that continues to raise its ugly head at the most inopportune moments, bringing embarrassment on her family.

When an old childhood friend, Micah Greyson, now a doctor, comes to her aid, old feelings are quickly rekindled. With the war erupting all around, life becomes difficult for both Keziah and Micah. Though their paths continue to cross and they find themselves steeped in a fight for freedom away from the noise of guns and battle, but nearly as dangerous.

I was immediately drawn to both Micah and Keziah, to their strengths and weaknesses as well as their devotion to their benevolent cause and to each other. I love characters I can relate to and enjoy experiencing the journey with.

The author does a splendid job of capturing the tension and emotions of the times. Brace yourself for lots of twists and turns in this compelling Civil War love story with an ending that truly satisfies.
