I’m thrilled to have my friend and fellow historical romance writer Misty M. Beller as guest today. We roomed together at the 2014 ACFW and have remained friends ever since. Enjoy the interview and then be sure to enter to win your choice of either a print copy (US addressed only) or an e-copy of her new release, This Daring Journey.

Hi Misty! Thanks for joining us today! Please share with us your favorite part of the writing process.

Hmm…I think it’s those last few chapters of each book, where the writing tends to flow freely and I’m completely immersed in the story. I thoroughly understand my characters (for the most part) and they seem to take over the book!

Yes! I know what you mean! You have several books set in the wilderness. What draws you to the untamed mountain setting?

I’ve always loved the peacefulness of country life, far away from the sights and sounds of civilization. I love the idea of having to make do with what’s around you, as well. Learning to survive and thrive on the gifts God gave us in nature. And the mountains… (sigh) Their amazing grandeur calls me in a way it’s hard to describe. That’s my happy place. 😊

I so agree! My husband and I just returned from a trip to the Smoky Mountains. So beautiful! And such a vivid reminder of God’s handiwork! How similar would you say you are to your heroines?

That’s a great question! I think there’s at least a little bit of me in each of the leading ladies in my stories. Each story seems to have a different part of me, though.

What take-away value do you want readers to gain from this latest novel?

This Daring Journey is a story of trust. Learning to trust that God is taking us to the best possible place for us, even if it doesn’t look at all like what we thought we wanted. And learning to trust those things we hold dearest into the hands of our capable Father.

A wonderful message. Thanks for sharing. What advice would you give to an aspiring writer?

This is always a tough question, because there are so many things that are helpful! First, place your writing journey in God’s hands. Seek Him above everything, and He’ll lead You along the path He’s chosen to reach His very best for you! Second, read a LOT. Read in your genre. Read writing craft books. Absorb everything you can. Third, join a writing organization that focuses on the type of books you write. Joining ACFW (American Christian Fiction Writers) was one of the most helpful things I’ve done to grow as a writer. In fact, that’s where I met Cynthia, and for that, I’ll always be grateful to the organization! I’m also a member of Novelists, Inc. (for career novelists) and RWA (Romance Writers of America).

Aaw, thanks so much, my friend! I’m so grateful the Lord allowed our paths to cross! What can we expect to see from you in the future?

I have one final book coming in the Heart of the Mountains series. This Healing Journey is a reunion between some of my favorite characters in this series and those in the Mountain Dreams Series. I LOVED writing that book! It also has a great plot of its own, with new characters to fall in love with. That book releases June 19th.

Then my last book of the year is Hope’s Highest Mountain, a new series releasing from Bethany House on October 1st. Being published by them is something of a childhood dream of mine, so I feel incredibly blessed that God has carried it through.

Oooh! So excited for you. Both sound wonderful! Thanks for sharing!

Misty M. Beller writes romantic mountain stories, set on the 1800s frontier and woven with the truth of God’s love.

She was raised on a farm in South Carolina, so her Southern roots run deep. Growing up, her family was close, and they continue to keep that priority today. Her husband and children now add another dimension to her life, keeping her both grounded and crazy.

God has placed a desire in Misty’s heart to combine her love for Christian fiction and the simpler ranch life, writing historical novels that display God’s abundant love through the twists and turns in the lives of her characters.

As a half-Indian raised among her Peigan tribe, Moriah Clark knows better than to trust white people. The tragedy that resulted in her birth is proof enough. But when her trusted grandfather marries her to a white man, she has no choice to but to obey and hope this new life isn’t her downfall. Her white husband turns out to be a decent sort, but his unexpected death left her to birth a newborn baby among hostile mountain men. She wants nothing more than to retreat to the safe haven of her tribal upbringing. When a mysterious frontiersman arrives on her doorstep seeking her deceased husband, his offer to escort her and the babe to her people seems like the opportunity she’s been praying to find. But can she trust him?

Samuel Grant has been sent to retrieve Henry Clark for his sister’s wedding, but the sight that greets him at the little cabin in the woods is not what he expected. Not only has the man died, but Henry’s wife is fighting off an aggressive gang of men at gunpoint—while trying to conceal a newborn. He can’t leave the pair unattended, so helping her travel into the mountain country to reach her family seems like the only option. If he can win her trust, that is.
