Peace in the Middle of Storms
Immediately Jesus made the disciples get into the boat and go on ahead of him to the other side, while he dismissed the crowd. After he had dismissed them, he went up on a mountainside by himself to pray. Later that night, he was there alone, and the boat was already a considerable distance from land, buffeted by the waves because the wind was against it.
Shortly before dawn Jesus went out to them, walking on the lake. When the disciples saw him walking on the lake, they were terrified. “It’s a ghost,” they said, and cried out in fear.
But Jesus immediately said to them: “Take courage! It is I. Don’t be afraid.”
“Lord, if it’s you,” Peter replied, “tell me to come to you on the water.”
“Come,” he said.
Then Peter got down out of the boat, walked on the water and came toward Jesus. But when he saw the wind, he was afraid and, beginning to sink, cried out, “Lord, save me!”
Immediately Jesus reached out his hand and caught him. “You of little faith,” he said, “why did you doubt?”
And when they climbed into the boat, the wind died down. ~ Matthew 14:22-32 (NIV)
I love this section of Scripture. While it doesn’t say there was a storm going on, there was a lot of wind. I can’t imagine deciding to walk on the water when the wind was whipping the waves around my feet, in the middle of a lake. Shudder. But when Peter decides to step out of the boat onto the water, he doesn’t hesitate to be with his Lord and Savior.
Peter is doing great until… he looked at the choppiness of those waves, and he started sinking. Jesus immediately reached for and saved Peter. It’s not until they both are in the boat that the wind finally died down.
I can relate to Peter. There’s been so many times I’ve gone through different storms in my life. I’m buffeted by the wind slamming against me. I can’t find peace no matter how hard I try. Until… I cry out to Him and trust Him to work in the middle of my storms. It’s only when I turn the situation over to Him that I can finally find and rest in His peace.
This is the theme for my recent release, Wooing Gertrude. Here’s what the back cover says:
Enoch Valentine has given up finding peace for his past mistakes. He throws everything he has into being the new part-time deputy in Burrton Springs, Kansas while maintaining the foreman position at a local horse ranch. But when trouble stirs on the ranch, he questions whether he’s the right man for either job.
Peace has been elusive for most of Gertrude Miller’s life, especially under the oppressiveness of an overbearing mother. She takes matters into her own hands and sends for a potential husband, while also opening her own dress shop. Gertrude hopes to build a future where she’ll find peace and happiness.
Will either of them ever be able to find peace?

My answer to living through the storm is silence, worship music and resting in Gods love. In my largest storm I would listen to music about God sending healing rain. I also listened to a beautiful song about resting in the arms of Jesus.
